First Look: Inside The Wilshire luxury condo tower

Pelican Builders Inc. has opened a model unit inside The Wilshire, a new luxury condominium tower going up in the Galleria area.
The Houston Business Journal got an exclusive sneak peek inside the two-bedroom, two-bathroom model unit, which spans 1,400 square feet and starts from the $700,000s.
Despite the energy downturn, Pelican Builders and its sales partner, Houston-based Sudhoff Cos., have sold 80 percent of the units inside the 17-story, 96-unit condo tower. The longtime Houston homebuilder and condo developer even found buyers for all 12 penthouse units, which span 4,000 square feet and costs up to $3 million.
“I’m pleasantly surprised by how (the condo market has) held up,” said Derek Darnell, president of Pelican Builders. “Houston has become truly an urban city, but there’s still not a huge supply of condos.”
Darnell attributed The Wilshire’s brisk sales primarily to the project’s location. The Wilshire, located at 2049 Westcreek Lane, is rising on the site of the former Westcreek apartment complex near The River Oaks District, a luxury retail, dining, office and entertainment complex near Westheimer Road and the 610 Loop West.
Darnell said he has noticed a “big difference” in sales in the new year. In just the past week, three serious buyers have reached out inquiring about units in The Wilshire, Darnell said. Some of The Wilshire’s buyers are moving from Pelican Builder’s older condo projects. The Wilshire is Pelican Builders’ eighth high-rise condo project in the Bayou City.
Buyers in The Wilshire have tended to be well-heeled empty nesters looking to downsize from large homes into an easier-to-maintain condo.
“Condos have always been a lifestyle decision,” Darnell said.
The Wilshire features two- to three-bedroom floor plans, some with a study and den. The units range in size from 1,392 to 3,561 square feet and in price from $800,000 to $3 million. The Wilshire is expected to open in early July.
The Wilshire’s units feature 10- to 11-foot ceiling heights, Sub-Zero and Wolf stainless steel appliances, German SieMatic cabinets, hardwood floors and oversized master closets. The units will offer prewiring throughout for a sound system and an electric solar shade or curtains at all windows. A home automation system is available as an upgrade.
Common area amenities include 24/7 concierge service and valet parking, two guest suites that homeowners’ visitors can rent, a private residents lounge, resort-style swimming pool with a sun shelf and cabanas, a pavilion with an outdoor kitchen, a fitness center, a private dining room with catering kitchen and a backup generator in the event of a building power outage.
